Red Devils begin 2nd season at Sandy Creek

Published November 13, 2009

To be the best you have to beat the best, and Loganville will live that age old adage tonight.

The Red Devils (6-4) travel to Tyrone to face third-ranked Sandy Creek (9-1), champions of Region 5-AAAA. The first- round Georgia High School Association matchup could turn into a shootout as two offensive powerhouses lock horns.

Loganville comes into the contest averaging more than 35 points per game, having put up 57 last week against Winder-Barrow. The Fighting Patriots lost their opener by one point to East Coweta, but have been unbeaten and basically untested since then. Sandy Creek scores at a 36 points-per- game pace with three Division I commitments on offense, including running back Rajion Neal (Mississippi State) and wide receivers Jarrett Davis (Louisville) and Devon Hughes (Buffalo). Defensive back Isaiah Johnson (Georgia Tech) and defensive end Lacy Coleman (Louisville) have also pledged their services at the next level.

“We have played pretty good this year, though I still think we can really improve as a team and be even better,” said SC head coach Chip Walker. “We lost the first game in a heartbreaker in double overtime and I think that might have been a good thing for our team. It made us focus on being better as a team and trying to improve each week.”

Loganville coach Eric Godfree is impressed with Sandy Creek and fully expects a stiff test.

“It isn’t hard to see why they are ranked third in the state,” said Godfree. “However, we’ve had a good week of practice and our kids are looking forward to the challenge. We’ve been hampered a little by the rain, but our gym has been available so we’ve been able to get our work done.”

The Red Devils have one of the most exciting offensive units anywhere. Senior tailback Storm Johnson has put together a remarkable season, rushing for 1,733 yards and 28 touchdowns. He threw a TD pass last Friday and has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Johnson’s running mate in the offset I-formation, Mykel Wyyet, has rushed for 687 yards and six touchdowns. Wyyet was the leading rusher on last year’s region championship squad and is only a junior. The Devils’ passing game has been successful with senior A.J. Schmidt at the helm. The strong-armed Schmidt has thrown for 995 yards and 12 TDs.

“I think Loganville has a great team,” Walker said. “They are very well-coached and have several offensive weapons. I know Storm is the focal point of the offense but the quarterback and No. 40 (Wyyet) are both very good players too. The offensive line does a great job and is anchored by the Bailey kid, who is really good. The defense plays really hard and is always in the right place. We will have to play a very good game against a very good team.”

Offensive tackle Morgan Bailey has committed to Georgia Tech, while Johnson will attend the University of Miami.

Loganville’s four losses have come by a total of only 13 points with one being in overtime to No. 4-ranked Apalachee.
