Charrette over, review begins

With a draft of the Monroe master plan and Smart Code in the hands of city leaders, the process of reviewing the document outlining a vision for the city’s future will begin.
City planners Town Planning & Urban Design Collaborative LLC presented a 54-page draft of a plan for the city’s downtown Tuesday at a meeting which drew more than 50 people.
The study, which — coupled with the city’s Livable Centers Initiative plan — cost the city $86,000 after a$44,000 grant, calls for the city’s downtown to embrace architectural styles of the past. The principles of the plan call for more pedestrian-friendly roadways and storefronts while utilizing the city’s existing historic architecture seen in nearby cities such as Madison and Athens.
The week-long charrette solicited input from business owners and residents about what they would like to see the city look like in the future.
A review of the document shows additional city parks, cafes and vegetation.
“I think it is going to allow people, especially downtown business owners, to restore the facades, basically to restore the whole look of the city,” said city engineer and planning associate Matthew Chancey.
In January, the city is slated to review a draft of new codes by a TPUDC attorney. On March 26, the city’s LCI plan, which encompasses portion of the TPUDC project, is due to the Atlanta Regional Commission.
By May, the City Council and Planning Commission will be presented with a final document for review.
The Council could adopt the master plan and Smart Code re-write in July, city officials said.
The document is not yet available for citizen review, however Chancey said he expects TPUDC to provide links on the city’s Web site.
