’Canes runners ready for region

Published October 28, 2009

The Monroe Area High School cross country teams have each shown improvement in recent competitions. Their timing couldn’t be better since the Region 8-AAAA meet is coming up at 11 a.m. Saturday at the International Horse Park in Rockdale County.

“Spencer Cape is currently at a level to challenge for the individual region title and Bradi Lott will be a challenger for one of the top six spots,” said MAHS coach Ron Coleman.

The top six finishers in each varsity division qualify for the state meet.

Lott won her third individual title recently in a tri-meet with Franklin County and Hart County. Teammates Caitlin Garner and Resi Williams finished fourth and 14th, respectively. The Lady Hurricanes don’t have the necessary five runners to compete for team points.

Cape won for the fourth time this fall in the boys race with a time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds. Brent Garner and Josh Stumpf also placed in the top 10 for Monroe Area.

The Monroe girls and boys varsity squads each competed in the Carrollton Last Chance Meet Saturday.

“In the cold and on one of the most challenging course in the state, almost all of our runners ran their best times of the season again,” Coleman said. “I felt extremely good about the athletes’ performance and competitive efforts. I am optimistic that they will carry this mental drive into the region meet.”

Cape, who has been running in the No. 2 spot individually in regional competition, placed ahead of the league’s top runner — from Heritage — by 10 seconds. Cape placed seventh overall, earning top 20 honors. Monroe did not have enough boys or girls competing to place as a team.

Garner (18:40, 78th), Stumpf (18:52, 92nd) and Christian Nelson (24:02, 243rd) also ran for Coleman and the Hurricanes. John Villa competed in the open junior varsity race that included more than 400 coed runners. Villa overcame a fall and roll to place in the top 30 with a personal best time of 20:29.

Lott finished 53rd in 22:20 for the Monroe Area girls. Garner ran a personal best time of 24:28 while running without a shoe that was suctioned off her feet in the mud.

“These Last Chance times are re-adjusted due to the additional 75 meters added onto the course to avoid a muddy area,” said Coleman.

Loganville’s teams will also compete for the region title Saturday.
