SCDPS seize, drugs, money, guns along I-20

Three days of in the field criminal interdiction training for the Social Circle Department of Public Safety netted six arrests and more than 23 pounds of marijuana, $22,000 and three guns seized.
The training took place along I-20 Monday through Wednesday.
“We are thankful to Butts County Sheriff Gene Pope and their department, who agreed to come in and assist our department as we fight to keep drugs of our streets,” said Social Circle City Manager Doug White, who signed off on the training. “This has our officers excited and coming in on their own time to learn more about criminal interdiction and looking beyond the ticket.”
Members of the SCDPS were joined by members of the Butts County Interstate Criminal Enforcement Team, which included canines and interdiction specialists. While the SCDPS regularly concentrates efforts on criminal activity along the interstate, additional efforts were spurred by the training and the extra officers allowed a more intense endeavor.
Law enforcement officials say Atlanta is considered to be the hub in the Southeast for illegal narcotics and I-20 is a major distribution thoroughfare for carting drugs all along the eastern seaboard. SCDPS Lt. Scott Ford said efforts like this are helping fight the local drug problem as well.
“The dope we are taking off the streets here comes off I-20,” Ford said. “It’s easier to stop guns, money and drugs one lump sum at a time like this rather than shaking it down a quarter-bag at a time on Oak Street or out at the high school.”
It’s not just illegal drugs efforts like this sought out but also any type of illegal activity. And with a pending annexation of more of the interstate into city limits, efforts are expected to increase.
