Voters face tough calls on Tuesday

Published October 30, 2009

Voters in Loganville have tough choices ahead of them at the polls Tuesday.

Three incumbent councilmen — Wendell Geiger, Jerry Price and Pedro Vega — are on the ballot, as is a political newcomer, Dan Curry. The four are vying for the three at-large council terms on next week’s ballot. Winners will serve two-year terms.

Out of all candidates we met for offices in four cities, our editorial board was particularly impressed with Curry. He gave well-reasoned answers and seemed ready to offer new ideas on how to create the balance many in Loganville desire, between a “livable” downtown and the big retail growth that has come to town.

But if Curry is to win, that means one of the three incumbents must lose. After meeting with all three, we had a hard time saying any of the three deserved to lose their seat.

So we choose not to make an endorsement, but instead encourage voters to check out each candidate’s own words elsewhere in this paper. Three of the four council candidates made their plans known by answering The Tribune’s questionnaire; Geiger chose not to do so, saying he has been in office long enough for people to know where he stands on the issues.

We do endorse passage of the referendum on Tuesday’s ballot, in which voters have the choice to extend council terms to four years from two.

A yes vote would give council members more time to get to know the job and the ins and outs of city government. We think the referendum — which would be carried out gradually — would lead councilors to make better decisions without having to worry about politics so frequently.

The mayor’s race in Grayson is garnering attention, which in itself is news. The city rarely has mayor’s races and two of the council seats up for election are unopposed.

Mayor Jim Hinkle is facing his first challenger since running unopposed in 2001 and being re-elected unopposed every two years since.

Hinkle faces a sharp challenger in Damon Ladd-Thomas, a political newcomer.

Ladd-Thomas is running on a platform of making city government “more inclusive,” and we certainly aren’t opposed to that.

But we do endorse Hinkle, who has done enough to have the chance to see some improvement projects through to completion. Hopefully Ladd-Thomas will continue his push to share a new vision for Grayson.

Above all, we encourage every registered voter to study the candidates and take their stand on Tuesday.
