Forums good and bad

Published October 25, 2009

Monroe Mayor Greg Thompson had an easy time debating his opponent at Thursday night’s Walton County Democrat Party forum.

That’s because his opponent, former Councilman Wallace Beall, wasn’t there.

“All of our candidates were invited to attend and they had agreed to attend,” forum moderator Cynthia Watkins told the audience at the forum.

Beall said he was ill and could not make the event.

“I sincerely regret I could not make the debate,” he said in a statement. “My family physician advised me to go to bed and rest until my fever passed.”

Beall said he told both Kirklyn Dixon and Carlos Thompson of the party he would not be there via telephone.

Beall said once he is better, “I’ll be ready to debate any where and any time.”

One of the good ideas that emerged from the Walton County Chamber of Commerce political forum featuring the six candidates seeking office in Monroe last week was from District 8 council candidate Tip McConnell.

McConnell suggested the new Childers Park near downtown contain a monument to those Walton County military personnel who lost their lives fighting for our country.

McConnell said the timing is right, considering the loss of Lt. Joseph Helton who died in action in Iraq.

Regardless if McConnell wins the election against incumbent Jimmy Richardson or not, Monroe officials and the Friends of Walton County, the organization which is spearheading the park’s construction, should consider the plan.

As mentioned in Wednesday’s edition, the turnout to the above-mentioned chamber forum was lackluster.

I’ll call it pathetic.

It was previously pointed out very few, if any, people in attendance were not affiliated with the candidates, the chamber or the press.

Brian Thompson, who runs the city’s cable television station on channel 16, said there were probably a good amount of people watching it on TV.

Hopefully more residents show up to the polls Nov. 3 and put the remote down
