Marker has left her mark at LHS

Published November 4, 2009

The 2009 Loganville High School volleyball season ended a few weeks ago with a loss to Apalachee in the Region 8-AAAA tournament.

It was a disappointing end to a tough season, especially for the seven seniors on this year's team.

“The 10-24 record really didn't show all of the ability that was present on the court this year, along with the hard work and dedication all the girls put in day in and day out,” said LHS coach Joe King. “However, I was really proud of this team to continue to work and improve, even after some tough losses and times when we played great, but just couldn't pull out the win.

But beyond the final record, there were many bright spots this past season for the Lady Red Devils. One was the performance of a senior who will graduate as the most decorated volleyball player in school history.

Courtney Marker will leave the program with many awards, school and state records, a very good outlook and desire to play at the college level. And all of this at a very unlikely position.

Marker is a four-year letterman. As a freshman she played the setter position and made the varsity squad by having determination, coachability, and the desire to win, according to King.

“However, three years ago I decided to use a new defensive position on our team — the libero,” the coach said. “The libero is strictly a back row defensive player. A libero's main responsibility is to make digs — and for the past three years — that is exactly what Courtney has done for our program.”

After helping the 2007 volleyball team make the state playoffs as a sophomore at the libero position, Marker really stepped up during her junior and senior years.

As co-captain during her junior and senior seasons, she was voted by the other coaches in Area 8-AAAA to the All-Area first team at the libero position (only one player from all the area schools is selected at that position). It was a testament to her hard work and determination.

Besides the all-area accolades, Marker’s junior and senior seasons have also produced school records, as well as some top state records at the libero position.

During her junior year she set the school record for digs in a single game with 29 against Apalachee. She would also set a school record for most digs in a season that she would break her senior year. As a senior, Marker re-set the school record for most digs in a season with 415. She also would set the school record for digs in a high school career at 941. These impressive numbers during her senior season would also help her put up statistics that would rank in the top three all-time in the Georgia High School Association.

She will end her volleyball career for Loganville currently ranked third in the state all-time for digs per game in a single season at 5.32 and currently ranked third in the state all-time for digs per game in a high school career at 3.79.

Marker’s volleyball playing days aren't over yet. She will enter her second year this winter playing club ball with the Georgia Juniors in Athens.

She has also set her sights on playing volleyball next year when she attends college. She has made visits to Toccoa College and Augusta State University, but has not made a final decision.

“It has been a pleasure watching Courtney grow as a player and person these past four years,” said King. “Not only does she play volleyball with determination, she ‘thinks’ the game and that helps put her on another level.”
