Walnut Grove candidates head down stretch

Published October 28, 2009

The candidates have been out beating the streets in Walnut Grove as election day draws near.

“I’ve been going house to house, meeting some of the local neighbors, passing out flyers,” said newcomer Gerald Fleming, who is running against two incumbents for two seats on the city council. “I’m planning on doing some bulk mailing, advising everyone of the election and if I am elected, what I plan on doing or attempting to accomplish.”

Without council districts, Fleming and current city councilmen Wayne Dimsdale and Jerry Smith will run for the two at-large seats, with the highest vote getters the winners.

Fleming is hoping to bring fresh ideas to the council and has picked up a few other ideas while out talking with the citizenry, including posting the minutes from city council meetings on the city’s Web site.

“Overall, the experience as whole has been good,” Fleming said. “Everybody has been real supportive and the citizens have been positive.”

Both Dimsdale and Smith are running for their fourth terms on the council.

“I like it because it means more people are interested in getting out and in essence work for the city,” Smith said about having an opponent. “While the pay’s not good, it’s what you learn that makes it worth running.”

Smith said he has learned a lot about sewer, with the city currently trying to build a sewage facility to help the city, and the current city councilman said he has also learned a lot about working with other municipalities in the county through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

Dimsdale has said while the city has accomplished a lot, he wants to stick around to do his part for projects coming down the pipeline

With so much accomplished over the past four years, and more slated for the next four years, the winners are sure have a hand in shaping the future of the city.
