Loganville to shine at City Hall tonight

Published November 27, 2009

Residents who missed Gwinnett County’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony last night will have an opportunity to attend the revamped Loganville ceremony at 6 p.m. tonight at City Hall.

This event, organized completely by the city this year, will run from 6 to 9 p.m. with live entertainment and crafts for the children. Santa will arrive by train and children will have the opportunity to have a picture made on Santa’s sleigh or even to have a ride in the train. Michelle Lynch, wife of Loganville Councilman Michael Lynch, organized the event, which was sponsored by The Loganville Tribune, Suntrust Bank and Athens First in Loganville this year.

“We will have live entertainment and snacks for the kids,” Lynch said, adding e-mail addresses would be taken and pictures taken of the children with Santa would be e-mailed digitally to the family of the children photographed. Officials are asking the community to “come out and celebrate the season.” The sleigh will remain in front of City Hall until a day or two before Christmas.

The city of Grayson will kick off the season with its Christmas tree lighting ceremony from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3. During this time Santa will be spending time in the Arts and History Center for pictures with the children and students from Starling Elementary School will be singing for the occasion.

On Dec. 7, Snellville is having its 28th annual lighting of the tree at City Hall with entertainment including performances by Britt Elementary and Snellville Middle schools. To focus on the meaning of Christmas, officials will have guests from the Marines representing Toys for Tots and are asking attendees to bring a small, unwrapped toy or monetary donation for the program. They are also collecting canned goods for the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministries.

Anyone who missed the official 22nd annual lighting of the Gwinnett Tree last night still have an opportunity to enjoy some of the festivities. The Santa Trolley rolls into the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse Square in Lawrenceville again from 5 - 8 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5 when children can ride along with the Jolly Ole Elf. Tickets will be sold for $2 per person. Parents and children can also enjoy a kid-friendly mystery dinner show, entitled “Grandma Got Run Over by Who?” Tickets for this show are $15 each.

Santa returns to the courthouse on Dec. 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 from 4:30 - 8 p.m. and Dec. 21 and 22 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for visits. Photos are $5 each. Santa’s Elf Workshop will also be open for some fun kid’s crafting for $1 per child. Visitors can take a free tour of the historic courthouse and there will be live entertainment at the gazebo on the grounds of the courthouse on Dec. 13. Also available on Dec. 19 this year, for a fee of $5 per person, there will be carriage rides around the square.

The Gwinnett Historic Courthouse is located at 185 Crogan St. in downtown Lawrenceville. For details on all the events of the holiday season at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse, call 770-822-5450 or visit www.gwinnett
