Marijuana grow houses in county reaches 10
Published March 11, 2007
WALTON COUNTY — Seventy-two hours. Ten houses. Hundreds of plants and pounds of marijuana. Nine people incarcerated. And they are still going.
That is the tally this week after the Walton County Narcotics Task Force raided several county homes to uncover elaborate operations for growing marijuana, a continuation of attempts to break up a statewide drug ring.
Two weeks ago law enforcement agents uncovered the first grow house in the county, a residence where a significant portion of the house is dedicated — complete with elaborate watering, lighting, heating and cooling systems — to the growth of marijuana.
That has since led law enforcement officials to 10 more houses in the county, with the latest round of the operation concentrating on houses in the eastern side of the county between Loganville and Walnut Grove.
The latest raid started Tuesday with two houses in the Golden Meadows subdivision, which led to another house in a subdivision off Guthrie Cemetery Road where officers discovered a stash of cash and more than 180 vacuum-sealed bags of high-grade marijuana.
That, in turn, led to another house on Rockview Lane off Center Hill Church Road Wednesday that was the largest bust thus far – more than 300 plants taking up the entire basement level of the house in various stages of the growth process.
Two more houses were raided Thursday off Monticello Drive, one of which also had large amounts of pot plants as well.
Officers have been working overtime. And there is still plenty more work to do. Officials said there were at least four more houses to raid Friday.
