Cougars hit the road for second round
Published November 6, 2009
Last Friday, the Cougars of Covenant Christian Academy played in the quarter- finals of the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia-Alabama state eight-man football playoffs, hosting Southern Region foe CrossPointe Christian. The game, played in a light mist, ended with the Cougars in control of a 50-0 rout.
The first Cavalier drive stalled out on downs and then the Cougars took over. On the first drive, Tyler Bliss, playing in his final home game, finished off the drive with the first of his six total touchdowns for the night. With the two-point conversion, the Cougars led 8-0 and never looked back. CCA took a 36-0 halftime lead and then added 14 more in the second half.
The Covenant defense was relentless. Outside of a few pass completions by CrossPointe, the Cavaliers were stifled the entire night. While they totaled 11 first downs, they were held to only 171 total yards. From an offensive standpoint, Bliss had his hand in almost every touchdown with four rushing and two receiving. Devan Williams added a touchdown run as he changed directions to beat the Cavalier defenders to the end zone to complete the scoring. Quarterback Michael Barton completed 5-of-7 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, the Cougars travel to Auburn, Ala. tonight to take on South Region No. 1 seed Ballard Christian for a semi-final game to determine who plays in next Friday’s championship. The Cougars and Eagles played earlier in the year, with the Cougars handing the Eagles their only loss of the year in a 9-1 season.
