Fundraiser to benefit wounded Army veteran
Published November 6, 2009
LOGANVILLE — When Sgt. 1st. Class Mark Allen, a Loganville resident and infantry member of the 48th Brigade Combat Team of the Georgia Army National Guard, set out for a mission in Afghanistan last summer, he didn’t expect to be home quite so soon.
Just a month into his tour, on July 8, Allen received a traumatic brain injury after being shot in the head. He is now at the veterans’ medical facility in Tampa facing a long road to recovery.
The Michael Stokely Foundation has joined with Chick-fil-A to help raise money for Allen and his family with an event at the Loganville location of the restaurant planned for Veterans Day. Many in the community will be involved with the Wounded Warrior Benefit Night for Allen, which will run from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A percentage of all funds raised will go toward helping support the Allen family during this difficult time
“I’m not a doctor, but my experience with this type of injury is that it takes about a year before you even know how the recovery will go,” said Robert Stokely, father of Loganville fallen soldier Sgt. Michael Stokely. “Mark and Mike served together and were both from this community, which has always turned out in such a great way to support the troops.”
Students from Loganville Christian Academy will help customers at Chick-fil-A write letters to wounded soldiers and make balloon arches to attract customers.
Allen’s story will appear in the Veterans Day edition of The Walton Tribune and all proceeds from newspaper sales at the benefit will be donated to the Wounded Warrior program for Allen. Anyone who can’t attend but would still like to contribute can do so through the Michael Stokely Foundation by sending donations to Wounded Warrior Spc. Mark Allen, 100 Fountainhead Way, Sharpsburg, GA 30277.
