Community rallies for wounded vet
Published November 13, 2009
LOGANVILLE — Chick-fil-A joined together with the Mike Stokely Foundation for a Wounded Warrior Benefit Wednesday with the hope the community would turn out to support one of their own.
And turn out it did.
The benefit was to raise funds for Sgt. 1st Class Mark Allen, of Loganville, an infantry member of the 48th Brigade Combat Team of the Georgia Army National Guard. While on deployment in Afghanistan July 8, Allen came under enemy fire and received a traumatic brain injury. He is currently being treated in a military hospital in Tampa and his wife and daughter have temporarily moved to Florida to be near him during his recovery.
The profits from all sales at Chick-fil-A during the course of the benefit were donated to the Wounded Warrior Benefit in Allen’s name. Robert Stokely, father of fallen soldier Sgt. Michael Stokely, a fellow soldier who had served with Allen before being killed in August 2005, was on hand to promote the benefit and Allen’s wife and daughter, Shannon and Journey, also returned to Loganville to attend. Chuck Lynch of The Tribune sold copies of Wednesday’s edition of The Walton Tribune at the benefit with all proceeds going toward the fund for Allen.
“We had the motorcyclists (from the Patriot Guard and Legion Riders) come in and they all brought newspapers for $20 a piece. It was a great turnout,” Lynch said, adding there were several notable donations from people in the community, including the youth from the Sanctuary Baptist Church that all gathered at Chick-fil-A to support Allen.
“There was also a veteran of three campaigns in the Vietnam War — he didn’t want to give his name but he left a check for $1,000,” Lynch said.
Anyone who wasn’t able to attend the benefit but would still like to support Allen and his family during his recovery can donate through the Mike Stokely Foundation by sending donation to Wounded Warrior Spc. Mark Allen, 100 Fountainhead Way, Sharpsburg, GA 30277.
