Firefighter charged with exposure

Published June 26, 2009

MONROE — An off-duty Gwinnett County firefighter was arrested by Monroe police last week for allegedly exposing himself to a woman in front of her home.

According to police reports, Kenneth Ray Griswell Jr., 35, of 1545 Greendale Road, Covington, was arrested June 18 after a woman reported he allegedly stopped his truck in front of her residence and shown her his genitals when she approached to find out what it was he needed.

The woman said she and her sister were sitting on the porch of their house on Chestnut Lane in Monroe when the incident took place.

She reported it to the police, giving a description of the suspect and the vehicle he was driving.

After canvassing the area, police reported making contact with the vehicle at Wall and Church streets, close to where the incident was alleged to have taken place, according to reports. The vehicle was stopped on North Hammond Drive at the Walton County Court House and police reported Griswell’s zipper was halfway down at the time.

Griswell, however, is reported to have claimed the incident was all a big mis-understanding and his zipper was down because he had urinated behind a home in the neighborhood. Police said once Griswell was read his Mirander warning at the Monroe Police Department, he chose not to make any further statements until he was able to get an attorney. He allegedly claimed he was going to sue the females who made the complaint for defamation of character.

Griswell was booked at the Monroe Police Department before being transported to the Walton County Jail from where, according to jail officials, he bonded out the same day. Griswell is charged with public indecency — indecent exposure, a misdemeanor charge.

Officials from the Gwinnett County Fire Department did know of Griswell’s arrest and the charge he faces.

“The department is aware of the situation involving Firefighter Griswell and are confident the charges will be adjudicated through the judicial process,” said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, spokesman for the Gwinnett County Fire Department.
