Godfree expects a war in state finals
Published December 11, 2009
Loganville High School head football coach Eric Godfree will be an interested spectator at 8 p.m. today in the Georgia Dome when Clarke Central battles Sandy Creek for the Class AAAA state championship. Godfree’s Red Devils lost a close decision to each of the finalists and predicts a close, exciting contest.
Clarke Central nipped LHS 20-15 in the season opener on the Gladiators’ home field when a late Loganville drive stalled short of the goal line. Sandy Creek took a 37-19 decision in Tyrone in the first round of the playoffs. The Red Devils trailed by only five points in the final quarter before a pair of turnovers allowed the Patriots to pull away in the waning moments.
“Both teams are pretty balanced on offense, doing a good job of running and throwing,” Godfree said. “The strength of both lies in their defense.”
Godfree, who has led two straight LHS teams to the postseason tournament, said the Gladiators have a better defensive line, the linebackers are evenly matched and Sandy Creek has a decided edge in the secondary.
“Offensively, Sandy Creek’s receivers could be the difference makers,” said Godfree. “Clarke has one great receiver while Sandy Creek has three really good ones. Clarke Central has a quarterback who can test you with his feet and arm. Sandy Creek’s running back (Mississippi State commit Rajion Neal) is a handful when he carries the ball.”
Godfree called the Patriots and the Gladiators “very good football teams who make it easy to see why they are playing for the state championship.”
“Hopefully, Clarke Central’s defensive line will be able to do something we weren’t, which is to put some pressure on the Sandy Creek quarterback,” said the LHS coach. “If they can — and I’d like to see it because they are from our region — Clarke can win the ballgame. I’m looking forward to watching what I think will be a great game.”
