Social Circle comes up short

SOCIAL CIRCLE — You got the feeling if they played five quarters, the Social Circle High School Redskins may have come out on top.
But they played four and the Elbert County Blue Devils came out beat the ’Skins 28-21 Friday in Social Circle.
An emotional head coach Troy Morris told his players after the game he was taking the blame for this one.
“You guys fought hard,” he said. “The whole dang game. We are going to get better than this.”
Social Circle started off the game with a drive peppered with runs from senior runner Jeremy Wyatt and receiver Chris Peters but were forced to punt, giving Elbert the ball on their own 25.
The Blue Devils moved the chains three times before Redskin senior Chris Burns recovered an Elbert fumble.
Social Circle mounted its own strong drive before punting on fourth-and-14.
The teams traded punts when an Elbert run from the 20-yard line ended with a fumbled ball on the 5 that found its way to the end zone. Blue Devils’ lineman Taylor Smith fell on the ball for the score.
With the point after try good Elbert County went up 7-0 with 7:13 left in the half.
Social Circle answered back with a 70-yard drive that was capped by a 6-yard touchdown keeper by quarterback Devaris Pitts.
With the Randy Paulus kick true, the Redskins knotted the score at 7 with 2:43 left in the half.
Elbert County marched 58 yards in just over two minutes to score on a 1-yard run by running back DeMarco Freeman.
Kicker Omar Vargas connected on the PAT and put the Blue Devils up 14-7 with 26 second left in the first half.
Social Circle forced an Elbert punt to start the third quarter, but a Redskin fumble killed the drive on their own 27.
The Blue Devils capitalized on the miscue with a 2-yard dive by Elbert runner Valdon Cooper.
The PAT was good, putting the Blue Devils up 21-7 with 9:43 to play in the third quarter.
Social Circle then ate more than eight minutes off the clock on a 74-yard drive capped off by a 10-yard TD pass from Pitts to Wyatt.
Paulus split the uprights and made the score 21-14 Elbert County with 11:55 to play in the game.
The Blue Devils took just over two minutes to drive 60 yards to the end zone on a 4-yard run by Cooper. With the PAT good, Elberton went up 28-14 with 9:49 left in the game.
After getting the ball back following an interception that ended their previous drive, Social Circle drove the ball to the Blue Devils’ 5 and on fourth-and-goal from the 1, Pitts scored his second running touchdown of the night.
The PAT was good making the score 28-21 with 1 minute left on the clock.
The onside kick failed and Elbert ran out the clock to win the game.
