Construction starts on Hwy. 20
Published November 6, 2009
Drivers traveling on Highway 20 between Grayson and Loganville can again expect delays due to construction as the Georgia Department of Transportation continues its project to widen the highway between the two cities.
Construction began Monday on the widening to a four-lane divided highway of the 2.7-mile stretch on Highway 20 between Cooper/Ozora Roads in Grayson to Brand Road in Loganville, GDOT officials said. Although there won’t be any lane closures initially, officials said to expect delays from people watching the work occur.
“Clearing and the installation of erosion control measures is under way in the project area,” said Randall Davis, DOT district construction engineer, adding people can expect to see equipment arriving as the project readies for construction.
Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the $10.9 million project is scheduled for completion Dec. 31, 2011. Gary’s Grading and Pipeline Inc. is the project contractor. GDOT is responsible for 70 percent of Georgia’s $932 million in highway system ARRA funds. The remaining 30 percent is divided among the state’s 15 Metropolitan Planning Organizations and designated rural areas.
The ARRA is a national effort to create jobs and transform America’s economy to compete in the 21st Century. Nationwide, more than $48 billion in stimulus investments are being made in transportation infrastructure, including highways, public transit, high speed rail and aviation.
All selected ARRA stimulus projects are fully funded by the federal government with no state or local matching funds required.

According to DOT officials, Georgia is the third-fastest-growing state in the nation but ranks 49th in per capita spending on transportation.
