Ashton and Dylan were born in Clarke County to Taylor and Tricia McGarity of Monroe. They are survived by their parents: Taylor and Tricia McGarity of Monroe; grandparents: Michael McGarity of Monroe, Pam McGarity of Monroe, Patsy and Bob Hunt of Monroe, and William H. Shaw of Sardis; and great grandparents: James and Bonnie Goza of Tucker. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Dee Die McElhannon
Dee Die McElhannon Dee Die McElhannon, age 80 of Monroe, died on June 27, 2009. She was born in Walton County on June 2, 1929 to the late Dan Howington and the late Elise Shadburn Howington. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Jimmy McElhannon and her sister, the late Barbara Needham. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Phil and Donna McElhannon of Monroe; grandchildren: LCPL Taylor McElhannon of Al Asad, Iraq, Kristen and Josh Yancey of Monroe, Brett McElhannon of Monroe, Joey and Falesha McElhannon of Monroe; and two great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, June 30, at 2 p.m. at Corinth Christian Church with the Rev. Don Hardison and the Rev. Adam Turner officiating. Interment followed at Corinth Christian Church Memorial Gardens.

Mike Hughes Mike Hughes, age 58 of Loganville formerly of Lawrenceville passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Fairview Presbyterian Church, Lawrenceville with remains placed in state at 1:30 PM. Burial Church Cemetery. Mr. Hughes was a member of Fairview Presbyterian Church and Lawrenceville Masonic Lodge #131 F&AM. He was a supervisor for CDC as an animal care taker in Grayson and CDC at Clifton Road in the Aids Lab for 22 years and Director of Animal & Rabies Control for Walton County for 17 1/2 years. He is survived by: wife of 40 years Donna Huff Hughes, Loganville; daughter: Dana Hughes, Loganville; daughter and son-in-law: Amy and Jeffrey Wilkinson, Milledgeville; son: Mickey Hughes, Loganville; sisters and brothers-in-law: Jane and Fonza Simmons, Danielsville; Diane and Michael Shaw, Fort Smith, AR; sister-in-law: Dolores Hughes, Lawrenceville; grandchildren: Heather Hughes, Eric Wilkinson, Hailey Wilkinson, several nieces and nephews. Surviving are children: Kathy and Clarence Waldrop of Monroe, Clay and Kathy Peters of Social Circle; sisters: Maggie Pittman of Monroe, Francis Starr of Oxford; sisters-in-law: Betty Jo Bowen of Walnut Grove, Evelyn and Ben Riden of Madison, Dot Stewart of Monroe; grandchildren: Ryan Waldrop of Monroe, Steven Waldrop of Monroe, Adam Peters of Social Circle, Brandon and Sheena Peters of Madison; great grandson: Logan Peters of Madison. Mary Jo Dally Whitley
Mary Jo Dally Whitley Mary Jo Dally Whitley died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the age of 86. She was the wife of Dr. Thomas Y. Whitley, Sr., who preceded her in death on September 11, 2001. Her parents were Thomas Carroll Dally and Margaret Barrett Dally, both from Walton County. Mrs. Whitley was born in Walton County and graduated from Jersey High School at the age of 15, attended North Georgia College, and received a BA in Physical Education from the University of Georgia at 19. She was a teacher prior to her marriage, at which time she became a homemaker and mother. Columbus State University later awarded her an honorary doctorate, in recognition to her invaluable contribution to the success and growth of that institution during Dr. Whitley’s presidency. Mrs. Whitley was an active supporter and member of Friends of the Library, UDC, DAR, the Social Circle Garden Club, The First Ladies of Walton, the Gracious Ladies of Georgia, The Historic Preservation Society of Social Circle, and the Walton County Historical Society. She served as president of the Christian Fellowship Association of Columbus, Georgia, was a dedicated member of Ray Memorial Presbyterian Church in Monroe, and was named a Lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women.

Geraldine Moore (Gerry) Geraldine Moore (Gerry), age 87 of Loganville, GA passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Gerry was born on March 21, 1922, the only child of the late Asa and Ruth Tuck Moon. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Homer Harold Moore; sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip and Margaret Moore of Snellville, Warren and Susan Moore of Loganville; dearly loved grandchildren, Sara and Matthew Moore of Loganville. Gerry was a member of Center Hill Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 20 at 2 pm at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Grey officiating. Allison Maughon Poss Allison Maughon Poss, age 81 of Good Hope, died on Sunday, June 14, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband: the late Milton Poss and by her parents, the late Roy and Olive McCullough Maughon of Good Hope. She is survived by her children: Lisa and Hugh Bray of Alpharetta, GA, Nan and Alex Smith of Duluth, GA, Celia and Mike Thompson of Gainesville, GA, and John and Beth Poss of Good Hope, GA; grandchildren: Eric and Lindsey Thompson, Kellie and Colin Harvin, Valerie Schicho, William Thompson, Wesley Smith, Sheyra Messer, and Victoria Messer; great granddaughter: Ava Thompson; sisters: Marion Gann of Cape Coral, FL, Ina Maughon of Lilburn, GA, Sue Saye of Marietta, GA, and Molly Howard of Starkville, MS; brother and sister-in-law: Tommy and Carole Maughon of Buckhead, GA; and many loving nieces and nephews and their children. She attended Berry College, graduated from the University of Georgia, and taught at Good Hope and Monroe Elementary schools from 1946 until she retired in 1990. She cultivated a love of reading in her children, grandchildren and students.

Frances Freeman Young Frances Freeman Young, age 90 of Cumming, GA, formerly of Snellville, GA passed June 14, 2009. She was born Aug. 18, 1918 in Walton County, GA. Mrs. Young spent most of her adult life in Atlanta, moving to Snellville after she retired from Owens Illinois. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Snellville and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary unit 232, Snellville, GA. Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her parents: James and Lena Freeman and is survived by her sister: Norma F. Johnston of Loganville, GA; brother: Roy Freeman of Spartanburg, SC; nieces: Ann (David) Hayes of Cumming, GA, Patricia (Michael) Broaddus of Locust Grove, GA; nephews: Mark (Angie) Freeman of Forest City, NC, David (Denise) Johnston of Knoxville, TN, Thomas (Jeanne) Johnston of Loganville, GA; three great nieces; two great nephews; sisters-in-law: Dottie Deaton and Pearl Deaton. Willie Mae Fulcher Willie Mae Fulcher, age 82 of Madison, died on June 10, 2009. She was born in Webster County on Feb. 12, 1927 to the late James Franklin Murphy and the late Era McDowell Murphy. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Willie J. Fulcher. Mr. John Lamar Hea
Mr. John Lamar Hearn Mr. John Lamar Hearn, age 91, of Decatur passed away Monday, June 15, 2009. He was born in Monroe, Ga. on Nov. 2, 1917 to John Allen Hearn and Lillie McGaughey Hearn. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Kelso Hearn and Robert Allen Hearn, Sr. Mr. Hearn was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II in Europe as a Master Sergeant; he received several service medals, including the Bronze Star. He was a graduate of Monroe High School and attended the University of Georgia, Atlanta Division. He was a certified gemologist and formerly a partner in Hearn Jewelers in Decatur. He was retired from the Georgia State Revenue Department. Mr. Hearn was a longtime member of The First Christian Church of Decatur and served as the church treasurer for more than fifty years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Katherine Smith Hearn.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Jerry and Linda Doster of Monroe; daughter and son-in-law: Sue and Dick Jackson of Monroe; daughters: Ann Doster Smith of Rabun Gap, Ellen Stephens of Lawrenceville, Wendy Studdard of Monroe; 10 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Acton Gaines Griffin Funeral services for Acton Gaines Griffin, age 77, of Wedowee, were held Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at 2p.m. from the Liberty Grove Methodist with the Rev. Greg Norred officiating. Burial followed in the Liberty Grove Methodist Church Cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of arrangements. Mr. Griffin died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at his home. Mr. Griffin is survived by his wife: Martha Ann Vinson Griffin of Wedowee; two daughters: Pamela Griffin Nash and son-in-law: Mark, Tammy Lanette Griffin both of Loganville; three sisters: Lucille Gipson, Imogene Bishop and Norah Edwards all of Gadsden; five grandchildren. Pallbearers were: Adam, Alex and Austin Nash, Matt Clark, Randy and Martin McAnally, Brandon Harris and Jeff Wall. Honorary pall bearers were: Guy Wilson, Bob Rampy, Bill Mallory, Bill McAdams, Hobert Rampy, Steve Baites and Tracy Evers, Mens Brotherhood of Liberty Grove Church. Mr. Griffin was born April 6, 1932, the son of William Gartarell and Myrtle Lucille Russell Griffin. He was a member of the Liberty Grove Methodist Church, retired from the Maintenance Dept. of Wal-Mart, and had served in the United States Navy. Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his parents.
