Ethel Johnson Stephens
Ethel Johnson Stephens Ethel Johnson Stephens, 80, of Bogart, formerly of Monroe, died Aug. 25, 2010. She was born on Nov. 18, 1929 to the late Vera Eugene and Mable Kinsey Johnson. She was preceded in death by her sisters: the late Barbara Bumgarner, the late Gladys McMahan; brothers: the late Fred Johnson, the late Junior Johnson, the late James Johnson, and the late Paul Johnson. In her early years, she worked at the New Mill in Monroe. She was retired from George Walton Academy. In 1946, she married the love of her life, Lamar Harold Stephens to whom she has been married for 64 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a sister, Sara Keheley of Smyrna, Ga. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Carolyn Stephens of Athens, GA and a daughter and son-in-law: Janice and Ricky Hardigree of Bogart. Also left to cherish her memory are five grandchildren and their spouses, Larry and Renee Stephens, Scott Stephens, Angela and Trey Timmons, Amy and Scott Aycock, Adam and Jill Hardigree.

Hildred Morris Smith
Hildred Morris Smith Hildred Morris Smith age 90, of Walnut Grove, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at Great Oaks Assisted Living in Monroe, GA. Born on Sept. 8, 1919, Hildred was the daughter of the late Wilbur Samuel and Ettie Wheeler Morris of Lyons, GA. She studied voice at the University of Georgia and Sang with the UGA Glee Club at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. Hildred was employed by the U. S. Government for thirty-two years before retiring in 1981. During World War II, she worked for what was then the Civil Aeronautics Administration as an air traffic controller in West Palm Beach, FL. She worked for other agencies as an administrative assistant, including the Department of Agriculture, and the former Department of Health, Education & Welfare. Hildred was the widow of Marion Lee Smith of Walnut Grove, who died in 2001. She was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church where she worked, studied and served in many capacities throughout her life. Survivors include one daughter, Marian Smith Multer, and her Husband Tom of Westminster, SC; one son, Morris L. Smith and his wife Fay, of Monroe. She has four grandchildren, Dana Briscoe Brown of Athens, Charles K. Briscoe of Columbus, Clayton T. Multer of Greenville, SC, and William F. Simpson, Jr.. of Kingwood, TX. She was blessed with eight great-grandchildren, Ella, Isela and Wynter Brown of Athens, John Pope and Charles Briscoe of Columbus, Jackson Multer of Greenville, SC, and Emma and Connor Simpson of Kingwood, TX. Kathleen Margaret Carroll Wright
Kathleen Margaret Carroll Wright Kathleen Margaret Carroll Wright, age 82, of Monroe, Georgia, formerly of Stockport, England, formerly of Rutherfordton, NC, formerly of Hampstead, NC, went to be with God on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010. She is preceded in death by her parents, James Carroll and Margaret Callen Carroll; and infant daughter, Collette. Mrs. Wright is survived by her husband of more than 62 years, Gentry Wright; brother, Keith James Carroll of Stockport, England; son, James Keith Wright of Hampstead North Carolina; daughter, Chantal Parker of Cartersville Georgia; and daughter and son-in-law, Michelle Flannery-Alderman and John Alderman of Walnut Grove, Georgia. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kathleen McNeil of North Carolina; Katie Mae Poore of Woodstock and Gentry Parker of Cartersville. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren. Kathleen grew up in Stockport, England during WWII, singing and dancing onstage in her youth. As a young teen she served in the British ARP (Air Raid Precaution), riding her bike through the neighborhood to warn of air raids, get people indoors, and notify for blackouts. One time an incendiary bomb landed only a few feet behind her as she pedaled up Naples Road, spreading flames and almost burning an elderly neighbor. Kathleen served in the British Land Army as a young adult, working on an area dairy farm. Kathleen and Gentry met at Christmas time in 1947, when Gentry, serving in the American Army Occupation of Germany, went to Stockport to be best man at the wedding of one of Kathleen’s friends. It was love at first sight, and they wed on June 19, 1948. Thereafter, Kathleen was frequently and fondly referred to as Gentry’s WWII souvenir. Kathleen overcame many hardships in her life, including severe poverty, and the loss of a child, but never quite overcame basic fears developed as a child being raised in a war-torn nation. In 1967, Kathleen received a letter from the Immigration and Naturalization Service stating that she might be deported because she had not completed her annual registration as a military spouse. Kathleen wrote them back stating that while her husband was deployed overseas in Vietnam, she was busy raising a family, working a full time job, and maintaining the home. She added that she was so busy, she’d forgotten she wasn’t an American citizen. She became a naturalized citizen of this country in 1968.

Shewas born on Dec. 19, 1919 in Apalachee, GA to the late John Thomas Sidwell and the late Stella Thompson Sidwell. She was preceded in death by her husbands, the late Willie Frank McRee and the late Horace Jones. Surviving are: daughter and son-in-law, Jane and John Vincenzi of Marietta; sons and daughters- in-law, Bobby and Priscilla McRee of Sumter, SC, Ned and Paula Jones of Cullen, AL; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Frederick Strudwick Cates, Jr.
Former Hillsborough, NC mayor, Frederick Strudwick Cates, Jr., passed away Aug. 22, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Cates, a seventh-generation resident of Orange County, was born in Hillsborough, NC on Jan. 16, 1927. His parents were Frederick Strudwick Cates, Sr, and his wife Virginia Riley Cates originally from Keytesville, Missouri. Elizabeth "Lib" Thomas Cates, formerly of Carthage, predeceased him in death in 2006.The Frederick S. Cates, Sr. family had been engaged in farming and business in Hillsborough for several generations. Fred Cates, Jr. was the third child of four born to Frederick and Virginia. He was affectionately called "Boy" throughout his childhood and to this day his nieces and nephews call him "Uncle Boy." He was educated in the Hillsborough school system graduating from Hillsborough High School. Mr. Cates entered Clemson University as a pre-engineering student. While at Clemson, he was a member of the Army Specialized Training Program. He was called to duty and became an Army Corporal stationed on Kwajalein Island during World War II, serving as an Army airplane mechanic. When his duty was completed, he was honorably discharged earning a Victory Medal. After returning to Hillsborough, he enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Business Administration. While he was attending UNC,he met and fell in love with his wife Elizabeth Taylor Thomas, of Carthage, on the steps of Spencer dormitory. He often said that when he met Elizabeth,"this is when my life began." After graduating from Carolina, Mr. Cates married his beloved "Lib" and they lived in Hillsborough, where he operated family businesses, the Gem Theater in West Hillsborough and the Hickory House Restaurant in town while Lib taught history at Aycock High School in Cedar Grove. They lived in a small farm house he remodeled on the Cates family farm which is now the Occoneechee Mountain State Park. He often remarked on the beauty of the mountain laurel and rhododendron that blooms in the spring. His father owned the mountain and farmland, and he remembered it well from when he was a young boy. Fred started building houses and became a successful developer winning a contract to build post office buildings throughout the state. He was able to purchase back the home his father had built in Hillsborough which had been sold to the town doctor. He and Lib reared five daughters there. While raising his family, he became involved in government and the community. His father instilled in him the importance of voting and becoming an effective public servant. As a lifelong democrat, he held virtually every office in the Democratic Party from the precinct level to membership on the North Carolina Democratic Executive Committee. He was past-president of the Orange County YDC and because of his service, he was a nominee for the Outstanding Young Democrat of North Carolina in 1960. Mr. Cates continued to be an active member in the Orange County Democratic Party serving as the campaign manager for John F. Kennedy in Orange County. Governor Dan K. Moore appointed Mr. Cates to the North Carolina Prison Commission in 1965. He served on that board until he was elected Mayor of Hillsborough in May of 1967. He served Hillsborough for 16 years.

Frank Baccus Frank Baccus, age 102 of Monroe, passed away Aug. 21, 2010. Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Christian Church with the Rev. Kader White and Dr. Gene Acuff officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Baccus was a mason and a member of Woodmen of the World for 75 years. He was also a member of 75 years and deacon of 50 years at Mt. Vernon Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie Coker Baccus, who died in 1984. The late Tottie Rediford Brown raised her from age 3. Doris was preceded in death by brothers, David, Jay and Cary Brown. Surviving are husband, Glen T. Mary Frances Mims Mary Frances Mims of Oxford, passed away Aug. 5, 2010, at the age of 85. Mrs. Mims enjoyed roller skating, traveling, and was considered an excellent cook. She and her husband, Kenneth, both enjoyed witnessing for the Lord. Mrs. Mims was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar L. and Bessie (Chandler) Birdsong; great-grandson, Stanley Dean Johnson; sister, Rose Cobbs; and her brother, Ralph Birdsong. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Mims, Sr., of Oxford; son and daughter-in-law, Bryant and Brenda Mims of Newnan; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Zekie Breedlove of Monroe, Bonnie and Bobby DeLee of Oxford, Marcia and Keith Adkisson of Oxford; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and friends. Samuel Jones Gibson (Paw Paw), Samuel Jones Gibson (Paw Paw), 84, of Bethlehem, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 4, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Carrie Gibson, and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Nettie Jean Gibson; son, Barry Gibson, Norcross; daughters, Shelia (Jimmy) Fox, Bethlehem; Deanna (Kevin) McBurney, Athens; Deborah Jarrard, Bethlehem; and Sherri (Billy) Pike, Bethlehem; grandchildren: Amy Purcell, David Lee, Lisa Conner, Jamie Watson, Chelsea Norman, and B.J. Jarrard; five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gibson joined the Active Naval Reserves at the age of 17 and was stationed on the USS Nevada BB36 during World War II as an aviation electrician. With a talent for plants and landscaping, he started several nurseries after leaving the Navy. There are many properties in metro Atlanta whose beauty is the result of his handiwork. In 1972, he opened Riverside Azalea Farm in Bethlehem, Georgia. Known for his green thumb, especially with azaleas, he loved having his hands in the dirt and was always happy to share his knowledge of plants with others. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. Private Memorial Services were held on Aug. 8th at Tim Stewart Funeral Home.
